Depending on your budget, you may choose to go for a split-system air conditioner, a central air conditioning system or a ducted air conditioning system. This answer really depends on the size of your home and the type of system you are looking for. If you are thinking about purchasing a small split system, you may only have to pay $600-$750, but larger split and ducted systems may cost $2,500 or more.

A 5kW air conditioner will comfortably cover small (up to 20m2) and medium (20m2 - 40m2) sized rooms, including bedrooms, studies, small kitchens and small lounges. Larger bedrooms, kitchens and lounges (40m2 - 60m2), as well as open-plan areas (60m2+), will need greater capacity.

This will vary depending on the type of unit you have and what settings you have your air conditioner on, but generally, it will range from $0.25 per hour for a small unit to more than $3.00 per hour for a reverse-cycle unit that's cooling your entire home.
